Raising Your Kids as Human
I am not a parent yet. But I do know some bits and bytes of parenting. My information can be flawed but I think I have seen the different spectrums of growing up. And my subjects of comparison is myself and a couple of my very close persons whose life I have analyzed and came up with the following points:
- Always Answer Their Question:
Kids ask different types of questions. In our busy and stressful life, we sometimes feel like not answering them or in our mind might think like these are stupid questions. But if you feel that, take a deep breath and appreciate their thought process. The questions you are getting from them might be coming from some gap in their knowledge. So by answering, you are directly fulfilling their knowledge gap. But most importantly, indirectly you are nurturing the curious mind. You are telling them “its good that you have that question”. You are teaching them to be bold. Also, you are growing up a person who will not be afraid to ask if he or she is observing something not right.
If you don't have the answer, tell them I don’t know and try to discuss the question. Probably even discussing with them will clear out their question. And Most importantly, you will indirectly nurture curiosity.
2. Always discuss recent news during dinner:
Discuss contemporary news teaches your kid a couple of things.
A. Debating over the multidimensional topic: It teaches your kid to argue and form their opinion over various topics around them.
B. Expanding Knowledge Base : It informs and enlightens them with different cases and scenarios around the world.
3. Don't let them focus only on Text Books
Rather try to tell them different stories about the topic that he or she needs to know. It will help them relate textbook material with real life. They will not just study for grade purpose. But they will realize the study material.
On the flip side, they will not spend too much time really studying. Still, you will see good grades. Most importantly, you will let them absorb knowledge, rather than some texts.
I am still exploring other points that I think might be good. I will keep writing about it.
